Georgia Mountain Fair

The Georgia Mountain Fair hosts some of the most entertaining mountain festivals in Georgia, including the one that bears its name: the Georgia Mountain Fair. Nicknamed the "Showplace of the Mountains," the Georgia Fair shines the spotlight on the town of Hiawassee for 12 days every summer. During the annual Georgia Mountain Fair festival, visitors may enjoy country music shows, clogging, carnival rides, arts and crafts, exhibits, a parade and a beauty pageant. Those curious about the old ways of doing things will appreciate demonstrations of moonshine-making, quilting, blacksmithing, soap-making, and much more. A Pioneer Village at the Georgia Fair offers a look at an old-time mountain town, complete with a one-room schoolhouse, log house, barn, store, smokehouse and corn crib. Every year, approximately 100,000 people attend the Georgia Mountain Fair, held in the mountains of north Georgia, next to Lake Chatuge. The festival began in 1950.

The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds welcomes visitors to the Rhododendron Festival each May, a time of year when the 3,000 plants in its Rhododendron Garden are in bloom. The Rhododendron Festival features arts and crafts, such as woodwork, baskets, pottery and jewelry. A Bluegrass Festival is also held at the Georgia Mountain Fair in May.

The Georgia Mountain Fall Festival takes over the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds for 10 days in October. Highlights of the festival include country music, Gospel music, clogging, crafts and exhibits, the Pioneer Village and folklife demonstrations. Georgia's Official State Fiddler's Convention is also held during the Georgia Mountain Fall Festival. Music-lovers can enjoy hearing a variety of instruments, such as the fiddle, harmonica, dulcimer, dobro, mandolin and five-string banjo.

The stars of country music come to the Georgia Fair for a series of Superstar Concerts, held from May through October. Past performers have included Marty Stuart, Don Williams, Tracy Byrd, Charlie Daniels and Diamond Rio.
