Mountain Lakes, South Carolina
In November of 2012, National Geographic published a Special Edition titled, “50 of the World’s Last Great Places – Destinations of a Lifetime”. The Jocassee Gorges made the list due to our “intense concentration of waterfalls”.
Your destination of a lifetime in the Jocassee Gorges awaits you here in the upstate of South Carolina. Come enjoy our abundance of cascading waterfalls, lakes, rivers, hiking trails, quaint mountain towns and breathtaking scenic views. The pristine waters of lakes Jocassee, Keowee, Hartwell and Tugaloo are some of the best in the world, nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The national Wild and Scenic Chattooga River was given special designation by the United States Congress in 1972 because of its special characteristics and geologic and cultural values. It was also home of the iconic movie “Deliverance” starring Burt Reynolds and the infamous dueling banjos. There are over 150 waterfalls that grace the escarpment of our Mountain Lakes Region. We have hundreds of miles of hiking and horse riding trails throughout 85,000 acres of the Sumter National Forest.
