Discover Upcountry, South Carolina
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the northwestern corner of South Carolina is a land of natural beauty, authentic southern charm and exciting adventures. Crystal clear lakes, rushing rivers, gorgeous mountain vistas and quaint towns are a few of the many reasons to spend time in this part of the state.
With over 150 waterfalls and close to 40 golf courses in the area, you’ll be sure to find an outdoor activity that will challenge and inspire you.
There are museums and art galleries all over the six county area holding world-class collections and collectables. You’ll find performance halls hosting Broadway shows, mega-concerts and locally produced talent. Discover the history of the region and our country at preserved historic sites and museums.
All year long you’ll find activities for the public to enjoy. The SC Peach Festival in Gaffney and the SC Apple Festival in Westminster are perennial favorites. You’ll find spring flings and jubilees in almost every community when the flowers are blooming. Unique to this area is The Assault on Mount Mitchell, one of the nation’s most popular challenge rides for bicyclists. Originating in Spartanburg, the race is 75 miles long with over 7,500 feet of climbing, concluding at the 6,578-foot summit of Mount Mitchell (NC), the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.
When planning your visit, consider what you would like to see when you wake up. If it’s a bustling downtown, there are first-class hotels to choose from. If it’s a lakefront view, there are rental homes to consider. If it’s a secluded spot of wilderness, a cabin might be the ticket. When it’s time to eat, you’ll have to decide between the Chili-cheese-a-plenty from the Beacon Drive-In in Spartanburg or the Whole Roasted Branzino with spring onions, preserved lemon, and capers from The Lazy Goat in downtown Greenville. Either way, you’ll have a sampling of Upcountry cuisine. Enjoy!
