Hamilton, Missouri, might seem like a small town at first glance, but it has become a major destination for quilting enthusiasts worldwide, all thanks to Missouri Star Quilt Company and its founder, Jenny Doan. Known as “Quilt Town, U.S.A.,” Hamilton offers a charming experience that blends craft, community, and creativity.
Missouri Star Quilt Company began in 2008 as a small family business. With encouragement from her son, Jenny Doan began posting tutorials on YouTube to help others improve their quilting techniques. Doan’s friendly personality and simple step-by-step methods resonated with quilters of all skill levels, helping them bring their own creations to life. The videos gained in popularity – and so did her business!
Missouri Star found themselves expanding to accommodate the increased demand and today offers the world’s largest selection of pre-cut quilting fabrics. When you visit, you can explore a dozen retail shops dedicated to quilting. Each shop has a unique theme – ranging from seasonal patterns to modern designs – and sells hundreds of fabric options and sewing supplies.
The company’s flagship store, Missouri Star Quilt Co., is the centerpiece, offering fabric, tools, and inspiration in abundance. They also offer quilting demonstrations, showing visitors how to simplify sewing projects. To create a sense of community, Doan started up the Retreat Center, which hosts quilting retreats, workshops, and special events throughout the year. As projects come together, so do new friendships among the attendees.
When not shopping, visitors can browse the exhibits in the Missouri Quilt Museum or add to the World’s Largest Spool of Thread – measuring 22 feet tall and containing more than one million yards of thread (which visitors are encouraged to add to!).
Beyond quilting, Hamilton offers a smalltown feel with attractions like local antique stores, cozy cafés, and the J.C. Penney Museum, dedicated to the famous retail founder who was born in Hamilton.
