Meet Yumion: The Sweetest Ambassador

Vidalia, Georgia, a charming city in the heart of the Southeast, is more than just a place; it’s centrally located in the growing region of Georgia’s state vegetable, the Vidalia Onion. With its rich history, warm hospitality, and unique culture, Vidalia offers an escape for travelers seeking Southern adventure.

At the center of Vidalia’s charm is Yumion, the beloved mascot and ambassador of the world-famous Vidalia Onion. This larger-than-life character embodies the spirit of the area, captivating visitors of all ages with a friendly demeanor and infectious enthusiasm. Find him Monday-Friday, 9a -5p at the Vidalia Onion Museum located at 100 Sweet Onion Drive. The moment you arrive, Yumion is there to greet you with a smile and “Howdy wave of his hand!”

Yumion, the ambassador at large for the Vidalia Onion, sprouted because of a contest created by the Vidalia Chamber of Commerce in 1980. A drawing by Wayne McMichael of the proposed onion character was published in The Vidalia Advance along with an entry form asking contestants to name the character. The name of Yum-Ion, submitted by Mrs. Nell Thompson of Daleville, Virginia, was selected as the winner and changed to the now famous “YUMION.” While all rights to the Yumion service mark are held by the Greater Vidalia Chamber of Commerce, in 1992 the Chamber transferred the rights to the Yumion costume to the Vidalia Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Yumion’s first appearance was in Savannah, and he has traveled as far north as Canada and as far west as California. The Yumion costume has been redesigned over the years and his sweet face has become even more lovable.

He’s always the life of the party and participates in various events throughout the year and is a regular in area parades.  Yumion always presides over the Vidalia Onion Festival annually in April and takes center stage at events and interacts with fans. The festival is a culinary extravaganza that celebrates the area’s most prized possession, the Vidalia Onion. During this annual event, visitors can indulge in a variety of onion-inspired dishes, from savory to sweet. It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience the town’s vibrant culture and meet people from near and far.

While the Vidalia Onion Festival is a highlight, Vidalia offers year-round attractions and activities. Explore the historic downtown area, visit local shops, The Pal Theatre, genealogy library, plus more! For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of opportunities for fishing, boating, and hunting in the surrounding natural areas.
